Der Mensch ist Heidegger zufolge nicht in erster Linie ein auf die Erkenntnis des Vorhandenen abzielendes Wesen. Er ist vielmehr als Dasein ein Wesen, das je schon in sein 'Da' geworfen ist, das also nicht erst künstlich und nachträglich beginnt, eine Erkenntnisrelation zur Außenwelt herzustellen, sondern sich immer schon in einem praktischen Verhältnis zu seiner konkreten Umwelt - zum "Zuhandenen"57 - vorfindet.58 In diesem Sinn stellt Heidegger gegen Kant heraus: "Das Ich ist nicht nur 'Ich denke' sondern 'Ich denke etwas'."59 Und er expliziert: "Kant vermied zwar die Abschnürung des Ich vom Denken, ohne jedoch das 'Ich denke' selbst in seinem vollen Wesensbestande als 'Ich denke etwas' anzusetzen und vor allem ohne die ontologische 'Voraussetzung' für das 'Ich denke etwas' als Grundbestimmtheit des Selbst zu sehen."

As Dasein, he is far more a being which has always been cast amidst in its 'there' (Da), and thus did not first begin artificially and retrospectively to construct an epistemological relationship to the outside world, but rather one which had always found itself practically related to a concrete environment - to the "ready-to-hand" (das Zuhandene). Here Heidegger highlights: "The 'I' is not just an 'I think', but an 'I think something'." And he explains: "Kant has indeed avoided cutting the 'I' adrift from thinking; but he has done so without starting with the 'I think' itself in its full essential content as an 'I think something', and above all, without seeing what is ontologically 'presupposed' in taking the 'I think something' as a basic characteristic of the self."
