Tätowierungen können sehr unterschiedliche Funktionen und Bedeutungen haben. Die Literatur nennt u.a. Funktionen als Mitgliedszeichen und rituelles oder sakrales Symbol. Mit sogenannten Knast-Tätowierungen können Rangfolgen und „Kastenzugehörigkeiten“ etwa durch das Kreuz der Diebe dargestellt werden, sowie Funktionen, die der Häftling während der Gefangenschaft innehatte, wie beispielsweise „Schläger“, „Rowdy“, „Aufrührer“ oder „Boss“.
