Die Sichtbarkeit von Objekten resultiert aus der Antwort mehrerer Netzhautzellen im Hinblick auf die Wahrnehmung von Kontrasten in Abhängigkeit von der Größe ihrer Rezeptorfelder. Ein Sichtbarkeitswert in einem Bildpunkt lässt sich daher als Summe der Antworten der jeweiligen Filter, insbesondere Gaußfilter berechnen, welche die Antwort dieser Netzhautzellen abbilden. Entsprechend wird jeder Wert des Gradienten der Bildpunkte auf den Bildwinkel bezogen.
