Das Gebiet Bollen van de Ooster ist für den Schutz von Vögeln wichtig und gilt als wichtiges Ruhe- und Futtergebiet für die Tierarten Trauerente (Seegebiet), Brandseeschwalbe und Fluss-Seeschwalbe (Sandbank).

Bollen van de Ooster forms an important area for the protection of birds and an important resting and foraging area for the common scoter (in coastal areas), and the sandwich and common terns (on tidal plains).

Von größter Bedeutung ist die Kolonie der Brandseeschwalbe ("Sterna sandvicensis").

Notably the Sandwich Tern ("Sterna sandvicensis") has a colony.
