What we have here is nothing new, but it is something that happened at roughly the same time.

Von 1953 bis 1957 studierte er an der Royal Academy of Music in London Violoncello und Klavier, außerdem Komposition bei Howard Ferguson. Ab 1957 folgten Studien bei Gottfried Michael König in Köln (elektronische Musik), später wurde er dort Assistent von Karlheinz Stockhausen und arbeitete mit ihm an Carré. 1958 war er Korrepetitor bei der europäischen Erstaufführung von John Cages Klavierkonzert. Cardew, der 1961 nach England zurückkehrte, arbeitete dort als Graphiker und spielte und organisierte Konzerte. 1964 studierte er nochmals Komposition, nun bei Goffredo Petrassi in Rom. 1966/67 war er Mitarbeiter am Center of Creative and Performing Arts der Staatlichen Universität in Buffalo/New York, 1967 wurde er Professor an der Royal Academy of Music in London. 1969 gründete Cardew zusammen mit Howard Skempton und Michael Parson das Scratch Orchestra - eine historisch einmalige Vereinigung von Komponisten, Berufsmusikern, Laien, bildenden Künstlern und Schauspielern. Von 1965 bis 1971 spielte er außerdem in der Improvisationsgruppe AMM. 1973 verbrachte er in West-Berlin, wo er sich in einer Kampagne für eine Kinderklinik engagierte.

In 1958 he was correpetitor for the European première of John Cage’s Piano Concerto. Returning to England in 1961 he worked as a graphic designer and played and organised concerts. In 1964 he continued studying composition, now with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome. 1966/67 he worked at the Center of Creative and Performing Arts of the State University Buffalo/New York, 1967 he became professor at the Royal Academy of Music London. In 1969 Cardew, Howard Skempton and Michael Parson founded the Scratch Orchestra – a body of professional and amateur musicians, composers, artists and performers singular in hiostory.
