Election

Es reut ihm nicht seine Erwählung.

It repenteth him not his election.

Mögen die Apostel nun auf irgend eine Weise getauft worden oder mögen sie ungetauft geblieben sein, so daß obiger Ausspruch des Herrn über die eine Abwaschung lediglich unter der Person des Petrus an uns gerichtet wäre, so würde es dennoch eine große Vermessenheit sein, über das Seelenheil der Apostel abzutaxieren1), weil ihnen schon die Prärogative der ersten Aus-erwählung und des nachmaligen unzertrennlichen Umganges einen Ersatz für die Taufe hätte verleihen können.

But whether they were in some way or other baptized or continued unwashed, so that the saying of the Lord also about one bath75 should, in the person of Peter, have 63 reference to us only, it is, however, at present rather rash to pronounce an opinion on the salvation of the apostles, because a short way to Baptism could have been conferred upon them even by the privilege of their original promotion and their subsequent inseparable association with the Lord, since they, I believe, were following Him who promised salvation to every one that believed.
