Dem gefördertem Thermalwasser wird in zwei Stufen die Wärmeenergie entzogen. Im ersten Schritt wird die Wärmeenergie in Strom umgewandelt und im zweiten Schritt wird die Restwärme zur Fernwärmeversorgung genutzt. Das ausgekühlte Thermalwasser wird danach über die zweite Bohrung in einem geschlossenen Kreislauf wieder in den Untergrund zurückgeführt.

Hierzu dient ein bestehendes Fernwärmenetz, an welchem das Quartier Vauban bereits angeschlossen ist.

Dank moderner Technik ist heutzutage auch die Stromerzeugung möglich, sofern die Temperatur des Thermalwassers mindestens 90 °C beträgt. Im Gegensatz zu Strom aus anderen erneuerbaren Energiequellen, steht geothermisch erzeugter Strom rund um die Uhr zu Verfügung und erweist sich deshalb als besonders vorteilhaft.
