Es ist ausserdem seit langem bekannt (siehe die Veröffentlichung von A.J. Hill et al., Am. Chem. J., vol. 52, Seiten 769-775, 1930), dass unter hydrolytischen Bedingungen die 2-Oxindol-3-essigsäure der Formel Ia im Gleichgewicht mit der 2-Oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrochinolin-4-carbonsäure der Formel IIa steht, und diese Gleichgewichtsreaktion wird durch eine Oeffnung des Indolringes und einen ringerweiternden Ringschluss nach dem folgenden Reaktionsschema erläutert: Unter sauren Bedingungen ist das Gleichgewicht stark auf die Seite von IIa verschoben.

It is known since a long time (see the publication of A. J. Hill et al., Am. Chem. J., vol. 52, pages 769-775, 1930) that under hydrolytic conditions, the 2-oxindole-3-acetic acid of the formula Ia is in an equilibrium with the 2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline-4-carboxylic acid of the formula IIa and this equilibrium reaction is being illustrated through an opening of the indole ring and a ring-extensive closure according to the following scheme: ##STR1## Under acid conditions the equilibrium is largely shifted to IIa.

Im geschlossenen Kondensationskreislauf mit geschlossenem Ventil 3 und geöffnetem Ventil 4 wurden die Reaktionspartner bei 110 °C entsprechend der Gleichgewichtsreaktion I umgesetzt, wobei im Kondensator 5 Methanol soweit auskondensiert wurde, wie es die Kondensationstemperatur von -15 °C erlaubte (Startphase).

In the closed condensation circuit with closed valve and opened valve , the reactants were reacted at 110° according to the equilibrium reaction I, in the course of which methanol was condensed out in the condenser to the extent that the condensation temperature of ?15° C. allowed (start phase).
