Es handelte sich dabei um ungewöhnliche ekstatische Reaktionen der Teilnehmer auf das Gebet oder den durch Handauflegung persönlich empfangenen Segen.

Als Materie des Sakramentes betrachtete der hl. Thomas v. A. noch die Übergabe des Kelches mit dem Wein und der Patene mit dem Brot. Nach der Apostolischen Konstitution Pius' XII. über die Diakons-, Priester- und Bischofsweihen vom 30. November 1947 jedoch gilt allein die Handauflegung als die Materie dieser drei Weihen.

Heil aus seinen Wunden wurde uns zuteil, als wir durch Handauflegung eines von Jesus gesandten Apostels die Gotteskindschaft erlangten. Nur durch seine Wunden können wir in der Vergebung der Sünden vom Anrecht des Bösen befreit werden - welch unermessliches Heil!

Salvation through His wounds was offered us when we received the childhood in God through the laying on of hands of an Apostle sent by Jesus. Only through His wounds, in the forgiveness of sins, can we be freed from the claims of the Evil One: what immeasurable salvation!
