Der Erforschung der Namensbedeutung widmet sich die Hilfswissenschaft Onomastik. Sie beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung, Herkunft und Verbreitung von Namen, also unter anderem Personennamen (Anthroponymie), aber auch der Namen geographischer Objekte (Toponomastik) oder anderen Dingen. Dabei wird auch bei Personennamen die Entstehung (Ethymologie, Herkunft und das Alter) erforscht.
