Bei wissenschaftlichen Missionen, deren Inhalt nun gerade in einer deutlichen Verbesserung der bestehenden Sternkataloge besteht, hat man sich bisher damit beholfen, daß man die Sternpositionen relativ zum Satellitenkoordinatensystem mit geeignet ausgelegten Teleskopen vermessen hat und die inertiale Position der Sterne durch Rekonstruktion der Satellitenbewegung relativ zu diesem Inertialsystem am Boden ermittelt hat.
