Im Kopf befindet sich ein rundes Organ, die Melone. Delphine besitzen - ähnlich wie Fledermäuse - eine Sonarortung. Dabei werden ständig Klicklaute, rund 300-mal pro Sekunde, im Ultraschallbereich in der "Melone" erzeugt. Die Schallwellen bewegen sich so lange im Wasser fort, bis sie auf ein Hindernis stoßen und reflektiert werden. Der Delphin empfängt die Echos und kann dadurch Art, Form, Bewegungen und Beschaffenheit des Hindernisses oder der Beute orten.
