The invention relates to a method for detecting the modification of a physically measurable characteristic of a sample caused by an environmental influence. According to said method: (i) the sample is exposed to the environmental influence during an exposure period, wherein the environmental influence acts on the sample with a known location-dependent intensity distribution I(x, y) (intensity model) of which a model function M(x, y) provides the basis, (ii) the transmission, reflection or scattering of analysis radiation through the sample is detected according to the location co-ordinates (x, y) of the sample and the wavelength of the analysis radiation, thus determining a response function A(x, y) which reproduces the intensity of the transmitted, reflected or scattered analysis radiation according to the location co-ordinates (x, y) of the sample and the wavelength, and (iii) the correlation between the known location-dependent intensity distribution I(x, y) of the environmental influence or the model function M(x, y) at the basis thereof and the response function A(x, y) is determined by means of correlation analysis, said correlation being a measure for the modification of the physically measurable characteristic of the sample caused by the environmental influence.
