Die Wende warf ihr Leben aus der Bahn. 1991 verlor sie ihren Job und verfiel in Schockstarre: Sie meldete sich nicht arbeitslos, lebte von Erspartem und gab sich dem Schicksal hin. "Ich saß nur da, hab nichts mehr gemacht", sagte sie den BKA-Beamten. Hinzu lähmten sie private Probleme: Ihr damaliger Lebensgefährte und ihre Tochter Beate verstanden sich nicht. 1996 fand sie eine Anstellung als Lohnbuchhalterin, die sie aufgab, als ihre Tochter im Januar 1998 untertauchte. In der Vernehmung klingt es so, als sei das Verschwinden der Grund dafür. Annerose Zschäpe zog zu ihrer Mutter in die Hochhaussiedlung auf einer Anhöhe im Stadtteil Löbstedt, zehn Stockwerke, 38 Mieter. Die Schockstarre blieb.
