Ortsangaben

Bis auf die historischen Straßenzüge im Süden der Insel, ist Manhattan von seinem berühmten, schachbrettartigen Straßenmuster überzogen. Eine von West nach Ost laufenden Straße heißt "Street" und ist von Süd nach Nord durchnummeriert. Eine von Nord nach Süd laufenden Straße heißen "Avenue" und ist von Ost nach West durchnummeriert. Die Fifth Avenue, also die 5. Avenue, teilt den mittleren Teil der Insel in eine East Side (Ost Seite) und in eine (West Side). Da die Fifth Avenue im Central Park endet, übernimmt ab dort der Park die Aufteilung in East und West. Bei Ortsangaben werden in New-York bzw. Manhattan auch oft die Begriffe "Uptown" und "Downtown verwendet. Uptown bedeutet nach oben, also Richtung Norden, Downtown bedeutet nach unten, also Richtung Süden. ------------
