Massenspektrometer zur Analyse einer Probe, umfassend Mittel (1) zur Erzeugung eines Plasmas (3) in einem Inertgas im wesentlichen bei atmosphärischem Druck, wobei die Plasmaerzeugungsmittel Mittel (13) zur Erzeugung eines von einem Hochfrequenz- oder Mikrowellengenerator gespeisten elektrischen Felds sowie einen Plasmabrenner (9) zur Einleitung des Inertgases in das Feld umfassen, Mittel zur Einbringung der Probe in das Plasma, um dabei zumindest einen Teil der Probe zu ionisieren, einen Probennahmekonus (19), welcher dem Plasma (3) benachbart angeordnet ist und in seiner Spitze eine Öffnung aufweist, einen Massenanalysator (5, 6), welcher zum Empfang zumindest einiger der in dem Plasma (3) erzeugten Ionen angeordnet ist, welche durch die Öffnung hindurchtreten, und Mittel (25), um den Druck auf der dem Plasma (3) fernen Seite des Probennahmekonus (19) im wesentlichen unter dem atmosphärischen Druck zu halten, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Massenanalysator zumindest einen magnetischen Sektor-Analysator (5) mit einem Eintrittsschlitz (43) umfaßt, und umfassend Mittel (8), um das Potential des Eintrittsschlitzes (43) im wesentlichen auf Massepotential zu halten, sowie Mittel (40), um das Potential des Probennahmekonus (19) auf einem Potential gegenüber Massepotential zu halten, das annähernd gleich dem vom Massenanalysator (5, 6) benötigten Beschleunigungspotential ist, um dadurch das Potential, bei dem Ionen in dem Plasma (3) gebildet werden, auf eine derartige Größe anzuheben, daß die Energie der Ionen nach ihrem Durchtritt durch den Eintrittsschlitz (43) ihre Massenanalyse durch den magnetischen Sektor-Analysator (5) gestattet.

A mass spectrometer for the analysis of a sample, comprising means (1) for establishing a plasma (3) in an inert gas substantially at atmospheric pressure, said plasma establishing means comprising means (13) for creating an electrical field energized by a radio-frequency or microwave generator and a plasma torch (9) for supplying said inert gas into said field; means for introducing said sample into said plasma to thereby ionize at least a portion of said sample; a sampling cone (19) disposed adjacent to said plasma (3) and having an aperture in its apex; a mass analyzer (5,6) disposed to receive a least some of the ions generated in said plasma (3) which pass through said aperture; and means (25) for maintaining the pressure on the side of said sampling cone (19) remote from said plasma (3) substantially below atmospheric pressure, characterized in that said mass analyzer comprises at least a magnetic sector analyzer (5) having an entrance slit (43), and including means (8) for maintaining the potential of said entrance slit (43) substantially at ground potential, and means (40) for maintaining the potential of said sampling cone (19) at a potential with respect to ground potential which is approximately equal to the accelerating potential required by the mass analyzer (5,6) to thereby raise the potential at which ions are formed in the plasma (3) to such a magnitude that the energy of the ions after they have passed through said entrance slit (43) permits their mass analysis by said magnetic sector analyzer (5).
