God does not give us the crop, but the seed

Ich möchte abschließend sagen, Herr Sócrates, wir haben hier ein Samenkorn gepflanzt, das schon in einigen Jahren ein großer Baum werden wird, mit vielen Ästen.

I should like to say in conclusion, Mr Sócrates, that we have planted a seed here, which in just a few years will grow into a tall tree with many branches.

Dennoch bin ich noch nicht zur Gänze zufrieden, doch, wie ich in meiner Pressekonferenz nach dem Zustandekommen des Kompromisses mit dem Rat erklärt habe, müssen wir dies als Samenkorn betrachten, das jetzt gesät wurde und aus dem hoffentlich eine ausgereifte Gesetzgebung sprießen wird.

I am, however, not entirely satisfied, although as I said at my press conference after the compromise with the Council had been reached, we will have to regard this as a seed that has now been sown, and we hope that it will grow into fully fledged legislation.

In der Zwischenzeit hat sich vieles verändert. Vielleicht ist es nicht auf den ersten Blick sichtbar, aber ich schaue die Dinge anders an, anderes ist mir wichtiger geworden und der Wunsch, noch weiter in diese Richtung zu gehen ist stark geworden. Ich denke da ist ein Samenkorn gesetzt worden, das nun wachsen, sich entwickeln und gedeihen wird.

Much has changed in the meantime. Perhaps, it is not visible at first glance but I look at things differently, other has become more important to me and the desire to go further in this direction has become strong. I think as a seed has been used, which now grow, develop and prosper.
