(FR) Frau Präsidentin, werte Kolleginnen und Kollegen! Unsere Mitbürger, die auch Arbeitnehmer, Verbraucher und Steuerzahler sind, haben sehr wohl begriffen, dass die Europäische Union, wie sie gegenwärtig verfasst ist, keinen Schutzwall gegen die Exzesse der finanziellen Globalisierung darstellt, sondern ihr Trittbrett.

(FR) Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, our fellow citizens - who are also workers, consumers and taxpayers - recognise quite clearly that the European Union, as currently configured, is not so much a bulwark against the excesses of financial globalisation as a staging post on the road to those excesses.

Was wir benötigen, ist kein neuer Schutzwall für Europa, kein Eiserner Vorhang im Atlantik oder im Mittelmeer, sondern wir müssen uns dem Problem grundsätzlich stellen.

We do not need a new defensive wall for Europe, or an iron curtain in the Atlantic or the Mediterranean, what we need to do is to tackle the problem head on.
