Die bislang von einigen Fischereien eingesetzten Geräte zur Warnung der Wale, sogenannte Pinger, sind umstritten, da sie im Verdacht stehen, die Tiere großräumig aus ihren Nahrungsgründen zu vertreiben. Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Pingern erzeugt das neuartige, PAL (Porpoise ALarm) genannte Gerät Schweinswal- Kommunikationslaute, die von den Tieren auch selbst eingesetzt werden, um sich gegenseitig zu warnen. Dadurch soll PAL die Schweinswale auf die für sie unsichtbaren Stellnetze aufmerksam machen, ohne sie gleichzeitig großräumig zu vertreiben. PAL-Warngeräte können so helfen, sowohl die Belange des Naturschutzes als auch die Interessen der Fischerei zu erfüllen.
