Die Sekantenmethode beruht auf der Nutzung einer Sekante anstelle der Tangente im Newton-Verfahren, siehe Abbildung 5.

Dieser Sachverhalt liegt darin begründet, dass die beiden Iterierten x1, x2 Funktionswerte mit gleichem, in diesem Fall negativen Vorzeichen liefern, die Sekante zudem eine geringe Steigung besitzt und die Funktion F eine zunehmende Krümmung aufweist.
