Dezember 1887 musste Marble als Senatspräsident entsprechend der Staatsverfassung dessen Amt übernehmen und die angebrochene Amtszeit beenden.

Marble, who was President of the Senate at the time, became the new governor of Maine.

Nach dem Rücktritt von Gouverneur John G. Rowland wegen einer Korruptionsaffäre wurde Rell entsprechend der Staatsverfassung dessen Nachfolgerin im Amt des Gouverneurs.
