Das Auslesen der Daten geschieht durch physischem Kontakt der Karte mit dem Leser. Im Leseterminal wird die Kontaktfläche des Terminals mit der Kontaktfläche einer Chipkarte verbunden. Durch diese Verbindung fließt Strom und ein Taktsignal vom Terminal an die Speicherkarte und umgekehrt. Durch die Veränderung des Signals kann der Leser am Terminal die Daten dekodieren und somit ist der Inhalt frei zugänglich. Während des Schreibvorgangs auf eine Speicherkarte erfolgt dies in umgekehrter Reihenfolge.
