Im Koreakrieg flog er Kampfeinsätze, danach avancierte er zum Testpiloten für die Amerikanische Raumfahrtbehörde (später NASA).

He flew on combat missions in the Korean War, and afterwards went on to become a test pilot for the American space agency (later to be known as NASA).
