„Der Steinerne Schlüssel“ Das im Volksmund „steinerner Schlüssel“ genannte Megalithgrab in Apeldorn wurde aus mächtigen Granitfindlingen errichtet, die durch die Gletscher der vorletzten Eiszeit vor etwa 100.000 Jahren in die Region transportiert worden waren. Das recht gut erhaltene Grab aus ursprünglich 3 Jochen und mit Zugang an der Südseite verfügt noch über zwei der ehemals drei Decksteine und ist mit einer Kammergröße von ca. 5 x 2 – 1,4 m eine kleinere Anlage. Vieles spricht dafür, dass der „steinerne Schlüssel“ eines der frühen Ganggräber des Neolithikums ist. Als Urform der Steingräber gilt in Fachkreisen der Urdolmen mit nur einem einzigen Deckstein, der dann auf zwei bzw. drei Joche erweitert wurde. Urdolmen und erweiterte Dolmen haben keinen Zugang an den Längsseiten wie die etwas jüngeren Ganggräber (ohne Steinkranz) bzw. emsländischen Kammern (mit Steinkranz).
