Der Verzicht auf eigene Infrastruktur hat ihm schon einmal geholfen. Denn Netflix startete vor 15 Jahren als Versender von Leih-DVDs und ließ die Scheiben von der US-Post ausliefern. Als Hastings erkannte, dass die Zukunft im Online-Video lag, richtete er sein Unternehmen stärker darauf aus. Weil er nicht an einen eigenen Lieferservice gebunden war, gelang der Schwenk umso rascher und konsequenter. Sein Wettbewerber Blockbuster hingegen konnte nicht so rasch umschwenken. Die hohen Kosten für seine stationären Videotheken trieben Blockbuster in die Pleite.

The need for own infrastructure has helped him before. Because Netflix started 15 years ago as sending rental DVDs and ship left the windows of the U.S. Postal Service. As Hastings realized that the future of online video was, he directed his company this need. Because he was not bound by its own delivery service that succeeded the quicker and more consistent swing. His competitors Blockbuster, however, could not swing out so quickly. The high cost of its stationary video stores drove Blockbuster into bankruptcy.
