Vieles spricht dafür, dass der „steinerne Schlüssel“ eines der frühen Ganggräber des Neolithikums ist. Als Urform der Steingräber gilt in Fachkreisen der Urdolmen mit nur einem einzigen Deckstein, der dann auf zwei bzw. drei Joche erweitert wurde. Urdolmen und erweiterte Dolmen haben keinen Zugang an den Längsseiten wie die etwas jüngeren Ganggräber (ohne Steinkranz) bzw. emsländischen Kammern (mit Steinkranz).
