Die Zerstörung Im Jahre 356 v. Chr. steckte ein Mann namens Herostratos den Tempel in Brand. In Anlehnung an den Mann, seine Tat und vor allem sein Motiv der Geltungssucht spricht man heute noch von einer Herostraten-Tat, wenn eine sinnlose Tat gemeint ist, die nur der eigenen Wichtigtuerei dient. Der Tempel brannte in Folge der Brandstiftung größtenteils nieder. Aber nur wenige Jahre später wurde das bedeutende Heiligtum auf einer Fläche von ca. 65 x 125 m wieder neu errichtet. Es blieb bis zum Einfall der Goten um das Jahr 262 n.Chr. nahezu unbeschäigt. Nach dem Übertritt des römischen Kaisers Theodosius I. zum Christentum im Jahr 380 n.Chr. verlor der Tempel jedoch endgültig seine religiöse und kulturelle Bedeutung und diente am Schluss nur noch als Art Steinbruch zum Bau von Häusern und anderen Gebäuden. Heutzutage erinnert nur noch eine Säule nebst einigen Steinresten, die aus dem sumpfigen Gelände herausragen, an den alten Tempel.103 Meter

The destruction
 In 356 BC, a man named Herostratus put the temple on fire.
