Seit 1977 steht der Fennberger See wegen seines enormen botanischen und faunistischen Wertes unter Naturschutz. Hier, an den Ufern des Sees gedeihen zahlreiche, an feuchte Lebensräume angepasste Pflanzen. Über 35 Orchideenarten, schmalblättriges Wollgras, die Kuckucks-Lichtnelke, der Flusskrebs und weitere teilweise bedrohte Tier- und Pflanzenarten finden im 10 ha großen Biotop rund um den Fenner See einen geschützten Lebensraum.
