Da nun der HERR mit Hiob diese Worte geredet hatte, sprach er zu Eliphas von Theman: Mein Zorn ist ergrimmt über dich und deine zwei Freunde; denn ihr habt nicht recht von mir geredet wie mein Knecht Hiob.

And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

So gehorcht mir nun und bringt die Gefangenen wieder hin, die ihr habt weggeführt aus euren Brüdern; denn des HERRN Zorn ist über euch ergrimmt.

Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, which ye have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.

Darum ist der Zorn des HERRN ergrimmt über sein Volk, und er reckt seine Hand über sie und schlägt sie, daß die Berge beben und ihre Leichname wie Kot auf den Gassen sind. Und in dem allen läßt sein Zorn nicht ab, sondern seine Hand ist noch ausgereckt.

Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

In the Prologue of his Rule, Saint Benedict turns his monks’ attention toward these great truths: “For we ought at all times so to serve [God] with the good things which He has given us, that He may not, like an angry father, disinherit his children, nor, like a dread lord, enraged at our evil deeds, hand us over to everlasting punishment as most wicked servants, who would not follow Him to glory.” And, in his chapter on humility, the saint expresses himself in these words: “The first degree of humility, then, is that a monk always have the fear of God before his eyes, constantly beware of ever forgetting it.

Dein Kalb, Samaria, verwirft er; mein Zorn ist über sie ergrimmt. Es kann nicht lange anstehen, sie müssen gestraft werden.

Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?
