Bei Kipp- oder Schlepphebeln muss der Moment abgepasst werden, sobald der Kipphebel das EV betätigt hat und wieder hochkommt. Besitzt der Motor ein Schauloch mit einer OT-Markierung, stellt man diese durch geringfügiges Weiterdrehen des Motors deckungsgleich mit dem Gehäusezeiger. Falls nicht, kann der oberer Totpunkt auch mit Hilfe eines Drahts durch die Zündkerzenöffnung erfühlt werden. Erst jetzt kann das Ventilspiel mit dem Fühlerblatt gemessen werden. Lässt sich die Lehre "saugend", also mit ganz leichtem Widerstand durchziehen, ist das Spiel in Ordnung.
