Vater und Mutter waren durchaus kräftige, gesunde Naturen. Sie sind bis zu ihrem Tode niemals krank gewesen. Mich atavistischer Schwachheiten zu zeihen, ist eine Böswilligkeit, die ich mir unbedingt verbitten muß. Daß ich kurz nach der Geburt sehr schwer erkrankte, das Augenlicht verlor und volle vier Jahre siechte, war nicht eine Folge der Vererbung, sondern der rein örtlichen Verhältnisse, der Armut, des Unverstandes und der verderblichen Medikasterei, der ich zum Opfer fiel.
