Ein Bregenzer Wahrzeichen, der Martinsturm, ist ein barockes Unikum. Aber nur auf den ersten Blick. Ursprünglich stand dort ein Speicher aus der Zeit der Stadtgründung um 1250, der kaum höher war als die Stadtmauer. Der Speicher hatte einen Keller, höher liegendes Erdgeschoß und ein Obergeschoß. Schon in der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts befand sich im Obergeschoß ein kleiner Kapellenraum, der mit Holzwänden abgetrennt war. Im Jahr 1362 stiftete Graf Wilhelm III. von Montfort die Martinskapelle, die in den Folgejahren mit prächtigen Fresken ausgestattet und auf das gesamte Obergeschoß ausgeweitet wurde. Im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert wurde das bisher profan genutzte Erdgeschoß in den Kapellenraum einbezogen, indem man die Decke herausriß. Der Raum wurde dadurch in etwa doppelt so hoch, und deshalb liegen die Fresken für den heutigen Betrachter so weit oben.

A landmark of Bregenz, the Martin tower is a unique baroque. But only at first glance. Originally there was a memory from the time the city was founded in 1250, which was barely higher than the city wall. The store had a basement, ground floor and one floor higher lying. Already in the first half of the 14th Century was a small chapel on the first floor room that was separated by wooden walls. In 1362, Count William III founded. Martin de Montfort, the chapel, which was in the following years with magnificent frescoes and extended to the entire floor. In the late 15th Century included the previously used profane ground floor in the chapel, by tearing out the ceiling. The room was in fact about twice as high, and therefore the frescoes are for the modern viewer as high up.
