Mehrzylindrige Viertakt-Hubkolben-Brennkraftmaschine mit einer Kurbelwelle (12) und mehreren, in mehreren Zylindern hin- und hergehend gelagerten Kolben (16), wenigstens einem Einlaß-Tellerventil (20) und wenigstens einem Auslaß-Tellerventil (24) für jeden Zylinder des Motors, einer Nockenwelle (26) zur Betätigung wenigstens der Auslaßventile (24), dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß besagte Brennkraftmaschine (10) außerdem folgendes aufweist: einen Phasensteuermechanismus (34) für die Nockenwelle zum Antrieb besagter Nockenwelle (26) und zur Einstellung der Steuerzeiten der Nockenwelle (26) in bezug auf die Drehstellung der Kurbelwelle (12); mehrere Einlaßdrosseln (28), wobei eine der besagten Drosseln in der Nähe und stromoberhalb eines jeden der besagten Einlaßventile (20) angeordnet ist; und eine mit besagten Einlaßdrosseln (28) und besagtem Phasensteuermechanismus (34) für die Nockenwelle verbundene Steuerung (30) zur Abschaltung wenigstens einiger der Zylinder durch Betätigen des Phasensteuermechanismus (34) der Nockenwelle und besagter Einlaßdrosseln (28) derart, daß für jeden abzuschaltenden Zylinder die Einlaßdrossel (28) geschlossen und die Nockenwellensteuerung derart eingestellt wird, daß die Position mit dem größten Auslaßventilhub von etwa 90° vor dem oberen Totpunkt im Auspuffhub auf einen Punkt verschoben wird, bei dem der größte Ventilhub entweder ungefähr im oberen Totpunkt des Auspuffhubes auftritt oder ungefähr im unteren Totpunkt des Expansionshubes.

A four-stroke cycle, multicylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine having a crankshaft (12) and a plurality of pistons (16) reciprocally contained within a plurality of cylinders, at least one intake poppet valve (20) and at least one exhaust poppet valve (24) for each engine cylinder; a camshaft (26) for operating at least the exhaust valves (24); characterised in that said engine (10) further comprises: a camshaft phaser (34) for powering said camshaft (26) and for adjusting the timing of the camshaft (26) with respect to the rotational position of the crankshaft (12); a plurality of intake port throttles (28), with one of said throttles mounted in proximity to, and upstream of each of said intake valves (20); and a controller (30), connected with said port throttles (28) and said camshaft phaser (34), for deactivating at least some of the cylinders by operating said camshaft phaser (34) and said port throttles (28) such that for each cylinder which is to be deactivated, the port throttle (28) is closed, and the camshaft timing is adjusted such that the position of maximum exhaust valve lift is moved from approximately 90° before top dead centre on the exhaust stroke to a point at which maximum lift occurs either at approximately top dead centre of the exhaust stroke, or at approximately bottom dead centre of the expansion stroke.

Bei Kipp- oder Schlepphebeln muss der Moment abgepasst werden, sobald der Kipphebel das EV betätigt hat und wieder hochkommt. Jetzt befindet sich der entsprechende Zylinder kurz vor dem oberen Totpunkt (OT). Besitzt der Motor ein Schauloch mit einer OT-Markierung, stellt man diese durch geringfügiges Weiterdrehen des Motors deckungsgleich mit dem Gehäusezeiger. Falls nicht, kann der oberer Totpunkt auch mit Hilfe eines Drahts durch die Zündkerzenöffnung erfühlt werden. Erst jetzt kann das Ventilspiel mit dem Fühlerblatt gemessen werden. Lässt sich die Lehre "saugend", also mit ganz leichtem Widerstand durchziehen, ist das Spiel in Ordnung.
