Geography helps, because it accustoms Indians to the idea of difference. India's national identity has long been built on the slogan "unity in diversity". The "Indian" comes in such varieties that a woman who is fair-skinned, sari-wearing and Italian-speaking, as Sonia Gandhi is, is not more foreign to my grandmother in Kerala than one who is "wheatish-complexioned", wears a salwar kameez and speaks Urdu. Our nation absorbs both these types of people; both are equally "foreign" to some of us, equally Indian to us all.

Geographie hilft, weil es gewöhnt Inder auf die Idee Unterschied. Indiens nationale Identität steht unter dem Motto "Einheit in Vielfalt" gebaut worden. Der "Indian" kommt in solchen Sorten, die eine Frau, die hellhäutigen ist, sari-Tragen und italienisch sprechenden, wie Sonia Gandhi, ist nicht mehr fremd meine Großmutter in Kerala als jemand, der "wheatish Teint", trägt a Salwar Kameez und spricht Urdu. Unsere Nation nimmt diese beiden Arten von Menschen, beide sind gleich "fremd" zu einigen von uns, ebenso Indian für uns alle.
