Following the revision by Alvarenga and Höfling (2003), there are now 5 subfamilies, containing 14 genera and 18 species: These species were the product of adaptive radiation.

The influence of the tectonic closure of the Central American isthmus ca. 3.5 Ma ago on speciation and adaptation events in Carcharhinids is still not known (rapid adaptive radiation versus slow vicariance) and might provide deeper insights into the mechanisms underlying evolutionary processes. This is especially interesting, because the Caribbean Sea also is supposed to represent an adaptive radiation centre of deep-water sharks (see DFG application KR 2307/4-1) and results from both groups will assist in better understanding the evolutionary history and adaptations of modern sharks.

Der Einfluss der tektonischen Schließung des zentralamerikanischen Isthmus ca. 3,5 Ma Tagen auf Artbildung und Anpassung Ereignisse in Carcharhinids ist noch nicht bekannt (schnelle adaptive Radiation gegen langsame Vikarianz) und vielleicht tiefere Einblicke in die Mechanismen der evolutionären Prozesse. Dies ist besonders interessant, weil die Karibik auch soll eine adaptive Radiation Zentrum von Tiefsee-Haie (siehe DFG-Antrag KR 2307/4-1) und die Ergebnisse aus beiden Gruppen vertreten wird ein besseres Verständnis der evolutionären Geschichte und Anpassungen unterstützen moderne Haie.

Conclusion: A necessary multidisciplinary approach to carcharhinid evolution and systematics The integral part and the main goals in modern paleontological research (e.g., comparative palaeobiology) are to integrate various aspects and data, to reconstruct the evolution and adaptive radiation of organisms, and to understand the corresponding mechanism through time. Traditional (e.g., taxonomic) and modern methods (e.g., morpho-meristic approaches, cladistic methods) are necessary to analyse these mechanisms and to understand the evolution of organisms in it´s whole complexity (e.g., cladogenetic events, speciation modes [allopatric vs. sympatric], character transformations expressing adaptations).

Fazit: Eine notwendige multidisziplinären Ansatz carcharhinid Evolution und Systematik der fester Bestandteil und die wichtigsten Ziele in der modernen paläontologischen Forschung (zB vergleichende Paläobiologie) sind verschiedene Aspekte und Daten zu integrieren, um die Evolution und adaptive Radiation der Organismen zu rekonstruieren und die verstehen, entsprechenden Mechanismus durch die Zeit. Traditionell (zB taxonomische) und modernen Methoden (zB morpho-meristischen Ansätze, cladistic Methoden) sind notwendig, um diese Mechanismen zu analysieren und die Evolution der Organismen in ihrer ganzen Komplexität zu verstehen (z. B. cladogenetic Veranstaltungen, Speziation Modi [allopatric vs . sympatric], Charakter Transformationen ausdrücken Anpassungen).
