The Andalusian Nationalist ace, Garcia Morato, made some of his first scores with an He.51; then, when C.R.32s began to arrive, he quickly converted to the more maneuverable Fiat bi plane and became the first pilot to fly it in combat. On September 11, 1936, he shot down his fifth airplane, becoming the first Nationalist ace. Garcia Morato survived the war, emerging as the leading Nationalist ace with 40 victories. He was killed shortly after the war while staging a mock dogfight to oblige news cameramen.
