The D/P/S (Data/Parity/Stop) conventional notation specifies the framing of a serial connection. The most common usage on microcomputers is 8/N/1 (8N1). This specifies 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. In this notation, the parity bit is not included in the data bits. 7/E/1 (7E1) means that an even parity bit is added to the seven data bits for a total of eight bits between the start and stop bits. If a receiver of a 7/E/1 stream is expecting an 8/N/1 stream, half the possible bytes will be interpreted as having the high bit set.

Die D / P / S (Data / Parität / Stop) konventioneller Notation gibt die Festlegung einer seriellen Verbindung. Die häufigste Verwendung von Mikrocomputern ist 8/N/1 (8N1). Dies gibt 8 Datenbits, keine Parität, 1 Stoppbit. In dieser Notation wird das Paritätsbit nicht in den Daten-Bits enthalten. 7/E/1 (7E1) bedeutet, daß eine gerade Paritätsbit zu den sieben Datenbits für insgesamt acht Bits zwischen dem Start-und Stop-Bits hinzugefügt wird. Wenn ein Empfänger eines 7/E/1 Strom erwartet eine 8/N/1 Strom, wird die Hälfte der möglichen Bytes als mit dem hohen Bit gesetzt auszulegen.
