Those were hard times for the German people indeed, so it is easy to see why Goebbels felt the need for quality escapist entertainment like this hilarious school comedy. Heinz Ruhmann plays a successful writer who was educated by tutors and never attended school, and who decides to return to his hometown disguised as a pupil to find out what he missed. What ensues is a lot of good humoured foolery , with lots of tricks played on the teachers - something which nearly got the film banned because of its supposedly 'anti-authoritarian' tendencies. The only message the film delivers is that schooldays are the best days of your life, and this is probably the reason why it remains among the most popular of all film comedies in Germany and is cult viewing around Christmas time. The great Ruhmann is in his element in this film, but particular mention should go to the wonderful Erich Ponto as the eccentric chemistry teacher, who is perhaps the best character in the film.

Heinz Rühmann spielt einen erfolgreichen Schriftsteller, der von Tutoren und nie eine Schule besucht erzogen wurde, und wer entscheidet in seine Heimatstadt als Schüler, um herauszufinden, was er verpasst verkleidet zurückkehren. Was folgt, ist eine Menge gut gelaunter foolery, mit vielen Tricks auf den Lehrer spielte - was habe fast den Film wegen seiner angeblich "anti-autoritäre" Tendenzen verboten. Die einzige Nachricht, die der Film bietet ist, dass der Schulzeit die besten Tage deines Lebens sind, und das ist wahrscheinlich der Grund, warum es weiterhin zu den beliebtesten aller Film-Komödien in Deutschland und ist Kult Leser um die Weihnachtszeit. Der große Ruhmann ist in seinem Element in diesem Film, aber besondere Erwähnung sollte die wunderbare Erich Ponto als der exzentrische Chemielehrer, der vielleicht der beste Charakter in dem Film gehen.
