This species is outstanding and of sturdy appearance. It has striking glaucous grey new culms up to 9m tall with a 5cm diameter in good conditions. Like most borindas it is very fast growing — it quickly produces large but few culms, making propagation by division slow and difficult. Its leaves are large and soft and the culms age to yellow-ochre. New shoots are colourful and imposing. This collection of B. papyrifera is not the plant normally sold under the name, which is the Stapleton collection and which is consistently upright and distinct but not reliably hardy. The

A brand new and most promising hybrid recently developed in Brazil from Butia eriospatha pollinated with Syagrus glaucescens pollen. As this hybrid has never before been attempted, nobody can say what the resulting plants will look like, but it is hoped that Butia eriospatha will provide cold hardiness, a reasonable growth rate, and a keeled, recurving leaf and that Syagrus glaucescens will provide a compact, gnarly growth habit with thick, leathery, stiff, glaucous leaves. If it turns out this way, the plant will be an exceptional addition to the range of cold hardy palms.
