In Johnny's letter, it said that he figured out what the poem meant. It meant that you're gold when you're young. He wanted Pony to stay young and take advantage of his youth before he grows old. He meant that people only had one shot at youth and to not throw it away and use the youthful energy before it wanes into adulthood.
