A polymer according to claim 47, wherein said ammonium cation is 2-methacryloyloxyethyldimethylammonium (MEDMA) and said polymer comprises 5 to 30 weight-% of component (c') and 70 to 95 weight-% of the comonomer and ampholytic ion pair grafted therewith, wherein the amounts of comonomer and ampholytic ion pair are within one of the following sets of ranges given in mole-%: wherein AMPS is 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate, MES is 2-methacryloyxloxyethane sulfonate, AM is acrylamide, AN is acrylonitrite and X-AA is alkali salt of acrylic acid.
