An important difference between the criminal proceedings for adults and juveniles are that the latter are judged by a special juvenile court judge, who acts both as an examining and as a trial judge. Furthermore, in criminal proceedings involving juveniles, the parents or guardian and the Child Care and Protection Board are assigned more important roles. Also, the powers of the lawyer are arranged differently in some aspects. Another difference is that in principle the criminal proceedings for juveniles take place behind closed doors.

Ein wichtiger Unterschied zwischen dem Strafverfahren für Erwachsene und Jugendliche sind, dass letztere durch ein besonderes Jugendgericht Richter, beurteilt werden, die sowohl als eine Prüfung ein Richter handelt. Darüber hinaus werden im Strafverfahren mit Jungtieren, die Eltern oder Erziehungsberechtigten und der Kinderbetreuung und Protection Board wichtigere Rollen zugewiesen. Auch sind die Befugnisse des Anwalts in mancher Hinsicht anders angeordnet. Ein weiterer Unterschied ist, dass im Prinzip die Strafverfahren für Jugendliche hinter verschlossenen Türen stattfinden.

The Geauga County prosecutor, David Joyce, filed the charges in juvenile court, but he has said that the seriousness of the case would probably mean that Mr. Lane, 17, would be charged as an adult. If he is found guilty of the charges — three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of felonious assault on a student who was nicked in the ear — he could face life in prison without parole. It was a grim prospect for Mr. Lane, a slightly built teenager whose alleged attack — shooting dead three students at point-blank range — have left this tightly-knit community struggling for answers.
