Due to peat cutting and intensive drainage for both agriculture and forestry purposes, Europe has lost to date more than half of its mires. The situation with regard to Western and Central Europe – both enjoying a warm temperate climate – is even worse because less than 10% of the original mire resource remained.

Durch Torfabbau und intensive Entwässerung für die Landwirtschaft und forstwirtschaftliche Zwecke, hat Europa verloren mehr als die Hälfte seiner Moore Laufenden.
