Mr. Vonsattel and the cellist Nicolas Altstaedt stormed moodily through Heinz Holliger’s “Romancendres” (2003). A contraction of “romance” and “cendres” (French for “ashes”), “Romancendres” was inspired by a series of Schumann cello-piano romances that Clara Schumann burned before they could be published. Passages of Schumann-esque Romanticism peek out from behind spiky bursts, misty harmonics and metallic filaments of sound, a delicate interplay between cello and piano.
