Dverghamrar (Dwarf Rocks), just east of Foss, are peculiar and beautiful formations of columnar basalt. On top of the columns there is cube-jointed basalt. The landscape is thought to have been moulded at the end of the Ice Age. The sea level was higher at that time and it is believed that the waves caused the peculiar look of the rocks. Dverghamrar are a protected natural monument. Columnar basalt is formed when lava flow gets cooled and contraction forces build up. Cracks then form horizontally and the extensive fracture network that develops results in the six sided formation of the columns.

Dverghamrar (Zwerg-Felsen), östlich von Foss, sind besondere und schöne Formationen der Säulenartige Basalt. An der Spitze der Spalten befindet sich Basalt Cube verbunden. Die Landschaft ist gedacht, um am Ende der Eiszeit geformt worden sind. Damals war der Meeresspiegel höher und es wird vermutet, dass die Wellen das eigenartige Aussehen der Felsen verursacht. During the rehabilitation of the former basalt quarry located at Hohen Hagen near Dransfeld/Göttingen, tribute was paid to the special geological and mining features of the location, in which a substantial part of the natural monument was not filled, and so remained an attraction below Gaussturms to the public.

Bei der Rehabilitation des ehemaligen Basaltsteinbruches am Hohen Hagen bei Dransfeld/Göttingen wurden die besonderen geologischen und bergbaulichen Merkmale des Ortes gewürdigt, indem ein bedeutender Teil des Naturdenkmals nicht verfüllt wurde und damit der Öffentlichkeit als Attraktion unterhalb des Gaussturms erhalten blieb.

The kalvas of Kaltene is a national-scale protected natural monument, and in 2006 special trails were laid out for viewing those unique formations.
