Education was undertaken primarily as a means of propagating the Christian faith. Different religious corporations (Augustinian, Franciscan, Dominican) decided arbitrarily what, where and how to teach the Filipino children in line with their respective missionary activities, oftentimes without regard to sound pedagogy. It is not surprising that in practice and intent, Filipino education during the Spanish colonial rule was mainly learning the Christian doctrine. This was undertaken in the parochial or doctrina schools basically through catechetical instruction (Estioko, 1994).
