Robben Island is another place that you should visit if you can. It’s an island near Cape Town and for the last 400 years it has been a penal colony. A penal colony is a place (often an island) where prisoners are kept away from the rest of the world. In 1997 Robben Island was turned into a museum. The tour guides used to be prisoners there and tell you what it was like as they show you the island and the prison.

The site of the first British colony in Australia, Sydney was established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore of the First Fleet, as a penal colony.[5] The city is built on hills surrounding Port Jackson which is commonly known as Sydney Harbour, where the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge feature prominently. Las Tres Islas Marías is a group of small islands forming an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean about 100 km off the west coast of the Mexican state of Nayairit. At the beginning of the 20th century it was designated as a penal colony for Mexico’s most dangerous criminals and as a consequence, has been little explored. Botanist Fritz Heilfurth braved the obstacles in 1931 and returned with a Mammillaria that Helia Bravo described as M. patoni, clearly a close relative of M. mazatlanensis. Our acquaintance, Miguel Angel Gomez Garcia, a veterinarian practicing in Monterrey, Mexico, has a passion for parrots and an interest in cactus.
