In addition to the heme-cofactor, the enzyme has also been shown to contain a flavin group. It may therefore be justified to characterize the enzyme as a flavocytochrome protein. It may be that the flavin component is the sugar dehydrogenating unit in this complex enzyme, while the heme component serves for the storage of electrons to be incorporated into molecular oxygen for direct reduction to water. If this turns out to be the case, the cellobiose oxidase may be a very primitive precursor of a respiratory chain. It is obvious that further studies of the cofactors, particularly the flavin component, its structure and fLmction, are required before these questions can be settled.

Neben der Häm-Cofaktor ist das Enzym auch gezeigt, dass eine Flavin-Gruppe enthalten. Es können daher gerechtfertigt sein, um das Enzym als Flavocytochrom Protein zu charakterisieren.
