The nature of the clasts (mainly limestone and sandstone clasts) implies that their source area was located in the southern area of the Pyrenees, which suggests that the Jaca Basin had progressed to an erosive stage (Yuste et al., 2004). The Huesca fluvial system resulted from the coalescence of both fans: the Huesca fan, to the east, and the Balces fan, to the west. In the western sector some marginal, small alluvial fans remained, which also retrograded during this stage.

During the Early Miocene, the same palaeographic sketch as that for the previous period can be drawn (Fig. 14), though the alluvial fans retrograded. Terrigenous deposits onlapped the structures that had undergone deformation during the previous stage, which implies diminishing tectonic activity in the area.
