Because of the relatively large gaps between the rotor and stator of the axial and radial bearings, the friction is negligible, and the bearings can be operated with minimal wear[65]. Because magnetic bearings are actively controlled, stiffness and damping properties can be adjusted as a function of the feasible controloop dynamics [155]. Due to the integral behavior of the controller, the maximum possible static stiffness of a magnetic bearing is higher than that of a comparable rolling contact bearing. However, the maximum load rating is significantly lower than that of rolling bearings. Even at high speeds of rotation, the rotor in the magnetic bearing can be moved to eccentric paths, permitting a certain degree of self-balancing [52].

Wegen der relativ großen Spalte zwischen Rotor und Stator der axialen und radialen Lager ist die Reibung vernachlässigbar, und die Lager können mit minimalem Verschleiß [65] betrieben werden. Weil Magnetlager aktiv gesteuert werden, Steifigkeit und Dämpfung können als Funktion des zulässigen controloop Dynamik angepasst werden [155]. Aufgrund der integralen Verhalten des Reglers ist die maximale mögliche statische Steifigkeit eines Magnetlagers höher als die eines vergleichbaren Wälzlagers. Allerdings ist die maximale Belastbarkeit deutlich niedriger als die der Wälzlager. Selbst bei hohen Drehzahlen kann der Rotor im Magnetlager zum exzentrischen Bahnen bewegt werden, die einen bestimmten Grad von selbst ausgleichenden [52].
